2009 has come to a close and I am hopeful for a bright and exciting 2010. I'm not exactly sure what the new year will have in store for me, but I am open to the possibilities.

I have spent the better part of December fighting off various viruses and mystery illnesses, which have in turn resulted in the neglect my blog has suffered from. So, my solemn pledge for my blog world friends is to be more attentive in 2010 and provide you with lots of entertaining reading/viewing material.

However you spend your New Year's Eve, have a fun filled magical time (because you know it is going to be a blue moon tonight, which won't happen again until 2028).

...and be sure to have a designated driver if you plan on drinking some bubbly.

Dia de los Muertos

After a fun filled Halloween, the BF and I attended the Day of the Dead event at The California Center for the Arts. A huge interactive installation was set up and everyone from the community was encouraged to bring objects in memory of their loved ones to leave and in turn, become a part of the installation.

They also had arts and crafts projects for kids and the museum was also open for the evening. We had a fantastic time and will be attending every year from now on.

Of course we took a million pictures...

Halloween!!!

It is one of my most favorite holidays. Not only because it gives you free license to run around like a crazy person, but also because you are encouraged to channel your inner kid.

The BF and I went to an amazing, epic Luchador themed Halloween party on Saturday night where there was a photo booth for all the party goers. We had a super spooky time and have the pictures to prove it too!

I climbed a huge mountain

My sweet BF and I have been doing a lot of hiking this year. I seem to be quite content with hikes that don't test my will to live, but (thankfully) my better half likes to make sure we are always challenged.

Our newest conquest was the big Mt Woodsen and it proved to be the challenge we were looking for.

About a little less than a quarter of the way up we passed this huge water tank.

Okay, my legs are already tired. That water tank is getter smaller though...

By this point I have considered laying down and letting a wild animal make me his lunch.

That water tank is really small now and I kind of feel like I'm on top of the world.

And as soon as I think I can't take another step - I reach the huge 2600 foot payoff.

Yes, I may have shed a tear or two. I also may have threatened to turn back before reaching the top of the mountain, but I didn't. I was exhilarated and exhausted all at the same time once I reached the summit.

We took a few minutes to feel what it was like to stand on top of the world and then turned around to make the trek back down.

This just screams joy and happiness. I love that they don't take themselves too seriously and dive into celebrating the occasion. I'll admit that I've watched this several times in the few days I've known about it. It is beyond sweet and makes me smile.

The bread is here

and it was really tasty. Crunchy on the outside, warm and spongy on the inside. I will admit that this loaf was not my first attempt. I originally tried to make the bread with white-whole wheat flour and it absolutely did not work out. It was dense and couldn't property rise, but it still tasted decent. So for the second go around I gave in and just used all white flour. (oh well, just live a little Lauren).

I made a few adjustments to the recipe which helped the flavor and texture:

- I only used 1 1/2 cups of water instead of 1 5/8 cups
- I bumped up the salt from 1 1/4 teaspoons to almost 1 tablespoon

I suggest serving the bread right away after it initially cools, as it will be at the height of yumminess. If you decide to bake the bread and save it for a later date, plan on re-heating it in the oven for 10 min at 350 degrees. Because there is such a high water content, the outer crust will lose it's crunch which is one of the best parts of this bread.

I hope you take the plunge and make a loaf for yourself! I guarantee that if you share it with your friends and family they will never want to eat store bought bread again.

Goodbye Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson died from cardiac arrest today. I am in total shock and can't believe it. Completely devastated. He made music magic and was truly the king of pop.

I was lucky enough to meet Michael and several members of his family when I was a little girl. My parents owned an exotic plant shop in Los Angeles that was next door to the Jackson recording studio. Many times Michael shopped in our store and was beyond kind. I once went with my dad to deliver a cactus to one of the Jackson's home. They gave me a juice box and let me watch cartoons on a giant movie screen.

I feel awful for his children and hope that they are well taken care of during this entire experience.

Baseball and Fireworks

I found this recipe and really want to make it. Has anyone attempted it? How did it turn out?

No Knead Bread

Time: About 1 1/2 hours plus 14 to 20 hours rising
Yield: One 1 1/2 pound loaf

Ingredients:
3 cups all-purpose or bread flour, more for dusting
1/4 teaspoon instant yeast
1 1/4 teaspoons salt
Cornmeal or wheat bran as needed

1. In a large bowl combine flour, yeast and salt. Add 1 5/8 cups water, and stir until blended; dough will be shaggy and sticky. Cover bowl with plastic wrap. Let dough rest at least 12 hours, preferably about 18, at warm room temperature, about 70 degrees.

2. Dough is ready when its surface is dotted with bubbles. Lightly flour a work surface and place dough on it; sprinkle it with a little more flour and fold it over on itself once or twice. Cover loosely with plastic wrap and let rest about 15 minutes.

3. Using just enough flour to keep dough from sticking to work surface or to your fingers, gently and quickly shape dough into a ball. Generously coat a cotton towel (not terry cloth) with flour, wheat bran or cornmeal; put dough seam side down on towel and dust with more flour, bran or cornmeal. Cover with another cotton towel and let rise for about 2 hours. When it is ready, dough will be more than double in size and will not readily spring back when poked with a finger.

4. At least a half-hour before dough is ready, heat oven to 450 degrees. Put a 6- to 8-quart heavy covered pot (cast iron, enamel, Pyrex or ceramic) in oven as it heats. When dough is ready, carefully remove pot from oven. Slide your hand under towel and turn dough over into pot, seam side up; it may look like a mess, but that is O.K. Shake pan once or twice if dough is unevenly distributed; it will straighten out as it bakes. Cover with lid and bake 30 minutes, then remove lid and bake another 15 to 30 minutes, until loaf is beautifully browned. Cool on a rack.

Has this turned into a foodie blog?

It is certainly deficient in all things jewelry, gemstone and Etsy related. I'm not going to read too much into it though. The pendulum has just swung too far in one direction. It'll be back in the center soon.

In the absence of my jewelry creation I have been spending time writing, which is something that I used to do a lot of. I stopped for quite a while, but it's familiar to me, like riding a bike.

I thought about posting my stories/poems/creative blabber here, but it didn't seem like an appropriate venue. This blog has absolutely gone through an evolution of sorts. It started as an Etsy shop blog and has morphed into much more.

Long story short - my writing is a very separate entity and deserved a home of it's own. Meander on over and give it a quick read.

Veggie Pho

One of my favorite things to eat is pho. Unfortunately, there are very few restaurants locally that make vegetarian pho. I decided that I would take the plunge and try to make it myself and see how it goes. I found the recipe below at elliemay.com. I'll let you know how it goes! If you have your own amazing vegetarian pho recipe, please share it with me!

Ingredients

for the broth...
1 small unpeeled onion, quartered
2 unpeeled shallots, halved
8 garlic cloves, halved
a 1-inch piece of ginger, coarsely sliced
two 3-inch cinnamon sticks
2 pods of star anise
4 cloves
8 cups clear vegetable stock
3 tablespoons soy sauce
salt

for the soup ...
1 pound rice noodles
8 ounces seitan or fried tofu, sliced
6 scallions, thinly sliced (both green and white parts)
about 1-1/2 cups bean sprouts
a good handful of basil, mint or cilantro leaves, left whole
1 lime, cut into wedges
hoisin sauce
sriracha chili paste

Cooking Instructions

To make the broth, heat a large pot over medium-high heat. Add the onion, shallots, garlic, ginger, cinnamon sticks, star anise, and cloves and dry-roast, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables begin to char. Add the stock and soy sauce and bring to a boil over high heat. Turn the heat down to medium-low, cover, and simmer for about 25 minutes. Strain into a clean pot and discard the solids. Taste the broth and add salt if necessary. Keep warm over low heat.

While the broth is simmering, prepare the rice noodles. Place the noodles in a large bowl. Pour boiling water over the noodles to cover and soak for 20 minutes.

When you are ready to assemble the soup, add the seitan or tofu to the warm broth and allow to heat through. Drain the soaked rice noodles and divide evenly among 4 to 6 large bowls. Using a slotted spoon, scoop the seitan or tofu out of the broth and distribute among the bowls. Ladle the hot broth over the noodles. Serve the bowls of pho with the scallions, bean sprouts, herbs, lime wedges, hoisin sauce and chili sauce on a separate platter so that everyone can season their own soup as they wish.

Makes 4 to 6 servings

Hanging out with critters at the Wild Animal Park

We went to The Wild Animal Park this past weekend. I had a great time, saw lots of animals, plants and walked until my feet felt like they were gonna fall off.

I used to go all the time with my family as a kid, but haven't visited in several years. I guess it was easy to take for granted since it's practically in my backyard. The place is really world famous and if you find yourself in San Diego, I would advise that you visit The Wild Animal Park over the zoo (if you had to choose between the 2).

New Jewelry

I have two new necklaces to list in my jewelry shop and you are getting a sneak preview. I love them both so much and am fighting every urge to keep them all to myself.

This first necklace is a crackly blue Kyanite and sterling silver pendant on a luscious earthy strand of Rubies.

The second necklace is a Labradorite and sterling silver pendant on a strand of icy green Prehnite (Green Amethyst) and tiny sterling silver beads.

Bad Lauren, you have neglected your blog for too many days. I promise it's for a good reason though.

I have been busy preparing to teach jewelry making classes. How awesome is that!!?!!

I had the great pleasure to meet and take cake decorating classes from a fabulous woman, Rosanne Zinniger. She is the mastermind behind Ro Z's Sweet Art Studio. She teaches a series of fun and amazing cake decorating classes, but her Sweet Art Studio is much more than one note. She also teaches cooking, craft and painting classes. You can even throw a cupcake party at her studio. I am thrilled to be a part the newest addition to Rosanne's sweet world - jewelry making!

For now, I will be teaching a series of project style workshops on Thursday morning's and evening's starting March 26th. In my first class, students will learn how to make my signature Swarovski Cosmic Necklace. Students will learn how to make the Cosmic bead cluster and a wire wrapping technique too. If you live the the San Diego area and want to sign up, please do! Space is limited and I don't want anyone to miss out.

Each week, you can look forward to a new project. I plan on teaching earrings, bracelets and rings too. If you miss out on the March 26th class, don't worry - I will teach the Swarovski Cosmic Beaded Necklace again in the future.

While you're here, you should also check out Rosanne's cake decorating classes. I had barely ever attempted to bake, let alone decorate a whole cake before taking Rosanne's class. Sure, I was a little scared and thought I was in over my head, but Rosanne makes it fun and possible for even the most novice of baker and decorator. I am happy to say that today I could bake and decorate a cake and be proud to share it with my friends and family. How sweet is that?

The Oscars!

I love watching the The Oscars every year. It's like a holiday. The nominated films this year are so relevant and powerful and I was mostly thrilled by all of the winners.

The most touching and significant acceptance speech was given by Dustin Lance Black, who wrote the original screenplay for Milk.

He broke my heart, but also filled me with hope that with time comes change and the possibility for acceptance.

V Day in Julian

We spent Valentine's Day in cold and snowy Julian. Downtown was really crowed with tourists window shopping and waiting in a very long long for pie. So the BF and I bypassed the crowds and headed straight for the snow.

We always reminds ourselves that we are very lucky to live 20 minutes from the beach and an hour from the mountains (and snow). You wouldn't think that San Diego would see snow, but we do. Not a ton of snow, but snow non the less. It's very exciting for San Diegans.

We were super dorks and couldn't find our gloves or mittens - they are not used too often - and went without them, which explains that sad excuse for the snowman we made.

He is sporting sun glasses and a carrot nose, so I think that ups his awesome quotient a few points.

The day was tons of fun and I only fell over in the snow once. Sweet!

I also made soup

I made a really yummy Veggie Minestrone soup over the rainy weekend. It was muy tasty!

Ingredients
- 2 to 3 Tablespoons olive oil
- 1 small to medium onion minced
- 3 to 4 garlic cloves minced
- 2 to 3 stocks celery chopped
- 2 to 3 carrots peeled and chopped
- 2 small zucchini cubed
- 1 bunch kale chopped well (spinach can also be used too)
- 1/2 cup canned kidney beans drained
- 1/2 cup canned cannellini beans drained
- 1/2 cup small pasta shells
- 2 to 3 tablespoons fresh minced parsley
- 4 cups veggie stock or broth (1 box)
- 1 large can diced tomatoes
- 1 small can tomato sauce
- a pinch of fresh grated nutmeg
- a pinch or 2 of red pepper flake
- salt and pepper to taste

Directions
- Heat olive oil in a large soup pot. Saute onions until translucent.

- Add garlic, carrots, celery and cook for another 5 minutes.

- Add zucchini and cook 5 more minutes.

- Add kale and stir with cooked veggies. The kale will wilt quickly. Add kidney and cannellini beans and continue to cook for 1 to 2 minutes. Add salt, pepper, red pepper flake and nutmeg.

- Stir in the large can of diced tomatoes, tomato sauce and veggie stock. Cover and allow to come to right before a boil. Add the pasta and cover again for 8 to 10 minutes. Taste and adjust seasoning and check that pasta is cooked.

- Add parsley, stir and serve! (with bread, crostini, crackers..)

*I made Crostini by slicing store bought ciabatta bread into 1 inch pieces and baking in a toaster oven on each side for 4 minutes.

I met a dinosaur

We went for a long walk on the pier at the beach and met this guy, up close and personal and he was amazing.

I have never seen a pelican so close and was surprised that he was unfazed and relatively calm about so many people taking his picture. He also opened his HUGE beak and showed us his throat pouch, but the camera missed that shot.

As we walked further down the pier, we came across a few more pelicans. They were less colorful, but just as comfortable in our presence.

We got to the end of the pier and watched the waves and occasional swimmer and surfer before we headed back and ran into our first pelican buddy in his same resting spot.

The last Scrabble game of 2008

I failed to win once in 2008. No, I'm not kidding. The BF won every s-i-n-g-l-e Scrabble match we played. There was one time he only beat me by 2 points.

So my 2009 New Year's Resolution is to improve my Scrabble skills. Maybe there is a Scrabble crash course that guarantees to teach you the secret tricks to destroy your competition. I will shamelessly accept any tips you may have, because I am serious about this year's resolution.

Happy New Year's Eve everyone! I hope you all have fantastic celebrations tonight while you ring in 2009. I am thrilled to be saying goodbye to 2008 and am hopeful for a brighter new year.

10 years ago I was finishing my first semester of college. I was completely up in the air about what I wanted to major in, but I was leaning towards fine art. Most of all, I was thrilled to be finished with high school.

8 years ago I was looking at art schools in San Francisco and New York. I was dying to get out of San Diego.

6 years ago I was living in New York, making my art school dreams come true. I was really home sick and missed my family and sweet boyfriend (who diligently visited me every semester).

2 years ago I was living with my (still) sweet boyfriend and our cute little yellow cockatiel Diego.

Merry (almost) Christmas everyone!
My gift to all of my friends in blog-land is a fantastic "Best Chocolate Chip Cookies" recipe. They have crispy edges and chewy centers. YUM!

INGREDIENTS

* 1 cup butter, softened
* 3/4 cup white sugar
* 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
* 2 eggs
* 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
* 3 cups all-purpose flour (I use whole wheat white flour)
* 1 teaspoon baking soda
* 2 teaspoons hot water
* 1/2 teaspoon salt
* 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
* 1 cup chopped walnuts
* 1 cup dried cranberries

DIRECTIONS

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
2. Cream together the butter, white sugar, and brown sugar until smooth. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla. Dissolve baking soda in hot water. Add to batter along with salt. Stir in flour, chocolate chips, cranberries and nuts. Drop by large spoonfuls onto non-greased pans.
3. Bake for about 10 minutes in the preheated oven, or until edges are nicely browned.

The BF and I celebrated our 7 years of togetherness yesterday. 7 whole years! We spent the day together in Julian, the historical town/community known for it's apple pie.

I love visiting Julian around the holidays. The air is cold and crisp - sometimes there is even snow. Yes, snow in San Diego. All the shops are decorated for Christmas, the streets are filled with people drinking hot apple cider and your filled with the feeling that you have somehow stepped back in time.

We weren't quite prepared for just how cold it was, but we braved the elements and had a romantic lunch and shared a piece of amazing pie. We also did a little window shopping and took a bunch of pictures.

Ahhh, it's Friday again

My BF is very smart and catalogs all of our digital pictures in very neat and organized folders on the computer. He even used some fancy-schmancy numeric dating system that I don't completely understand for all of the folders so we have an exact date of when the pictures were uploaded.

I'm sure that if it were up to me, the pictures would be all over the place with no rhyme or reason and I would have to neurotically click all over to find that one pictures I was looking for. That is why I am the artist and he is the smarty pants web developer. (Can you tell I'm proud?)

As luck would have it (or a very methodical and organized system) I found this picture that I love so much!

The very smart BF is great about documenting all of our exciting adventures and this scrumptious fruit plate was from his birthday extravaganza in Palm Desert. We also had some tasty mimosas too.

But most importantly, when I see this picture I can still feel the hot sun beating on my toes, taste the sweet fruit we ate and remember how thankful I am for my BF's heightened analytical skills.

What a boo hoo fest

I got the flu really early Wednesday morning and also gave it to my poor BF. We have been sicker than dogs and missed Thanksgiving with our families. We were a pretty sad pair, but at least we were together.

I hope that we will be spared from anymore illness the rest of the year - fingers crossed.

So, this Thanksgiving I was thankful for Tylenol, ice packs, saltine crackers and Gatorade. Not the ideal party, but at least I had a loved one to hang my head in the toilet with.

Disclosure: This post will contain traces of whining and complaining, which may be unsuitable for some readers.

I hurt my neck and shoulder last week and it got better, but not completely. It was tolerable and I tried my best to deal with it, expecting it to go away. Well, boy was I wrong. Yesterday was awful. Nothing made it feel better and I couldn't seem to accomplish anything productive. My sweet BF came home from work and tenderized me like a piece of meat, gave me more Motrin than recommended and I went to bed.

I am feeling a little better today. Not by much, but I am trying to will the pain away because I have a big weekend ahead of me.

Sunday is my mom's birthday! We have a fun day planned for her starting with a champagne brunch in the late morning. I won't disclose anymore plans for the day in case she reads this post. I can fill you in on all the rest of the details later.

Then, Monday is the BF's mom birthday! We are going to take her out on Saturday for a fancy dinner and cocktails.

So, I will be popping pills, using a heating pad and begging the BF to massage my neck and shoulder every waking moment until I have returned to a semi human state again, because I refuse to have nothing less than a great time this weekend.

The Illinois senator's campaign issued a statement under his name and that of his sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng:

"It is with great sadness that we announce that our grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, has died peacefully after a battle with cancer. She was the cornerstone of our family, and a woman of extraordinary accomplishment, strength, and humility. She was the person who encouraged and allowed us to take chances. She was proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and left this world with the knowledge that her impact on all of us was meaningful and enduring. Our debt to her is beyond measure.

It is like the countdown to Christmas or your birthday - the day to vote is around the corner, just a short 5 days away.

Here are some helpful tips to ensure that you will have a hassle free election day:

1. Verify your registration. Before going to the polls, confirm your voter registration.

2. Confirm your polling location. Even if you've voted in the same place for 30 years, polling places can change, so make sure you know where to go on Election Day.

3. Vote early. Record turnout is expected this year, so if your state offers early voting (before Election Day), take advantage of it to avoid long lines and alleviate the strain on local election officials.

4. Remember your ID. Every state identification law is different and many have changed recently, so make sure you know which forms of ID are accepted in your state before you get to the polls.

5. Don't give anyone an excuse to keep you out of the polls. In some states, wearing campaign paraphernalia into a polling place - shirts, a buttons, etc.- is against the law. Cover up your campaign materials to ensure a smooth voting experience.

6. Report all voting problems to Election Protection at 1-866-OUR-VOTE or the Our Vote web site.

7. Do not be intimidated by false rumors. Eligible registered voters cannot be denied the right to vote because their homes have been foreclosed upon, they are late on child support payments, they have outstanding parking tickets, or they are students at local universities.

8. If you have been convicted of a felony, know your rights. Many states allow people who have been convicted of a felony and completed their sentence to vote. Know your state laws and don't be intimidated by misinformation.

I don't actually have a whole lot to blog about today. I am trying very hard not to inundate my blog with posts about politics and of course, all I am consumed with is the upcoming election.

I know that my mind will be able to return to some sort of balance after November 4th. In the spirit of maintaining balance here is a tasty recipe that I plan on using for a side dish at one of the upcoming holiday meals I have to look forward to.

French Beans with Roasted Figs, Thyme and Rustic Croutons

Makes 10 servings

Croutons:
* 1 loaf (16 ounces) walnut-raisin bread , crust removed, torn into bite-size pieces
* 2 tablespoons walnut oil
* 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
* 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground pepper

Beans:
* 3 pounds French green beans , ends trimmed
* 15 firm ripe figs , cut in half lengthwise
* 10 large sprigs fresh thyme
* 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
* 1 tablespoon olive oil
* 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
* 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
* 1 small bunch flat-leaf parsley , stems removed

Vinaigrette:
* 1/4 cup sherry vinegar
* 2 1/2 tablespoons finely chopped toasted walnuts
* 1 small shallot , minced
* 1/2 teaspoon chopped fresh thyme leaves
* 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
* 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
* 1/4 cup walnut oil
* 1/4 cup olive oil

To make croutons:
Preheat oven to 375°. On a baking sheet with sides, toss pieces of bread with walnut oil, salt and pepper. Bake 10 minutes, tossing once or twice, or until browned and crisp. Let cool. Leave oven on.

To make beans:
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil; add green beans. Cook 4 minutes, or until bright green and slightly tender; drain. Refresh under cold water; drain again and pat dry with paper towels.

In a medium bowl, gently toss figs with thyme sprigs, vinegar, olive oil, salt and pepper. On a baking sheet with sides, lay figs cut-side down and roast 10 minutes, or until lightly caramelized and cooked through. Cool on baking sheet.

To make vinaigrette:
In a medium bowl, whisk vinegar, walnuts, shallot, chopped thyme, salt and pepper; gradually whisk in walnut and olive oils until blended.

In a large bowl, toss croutons, green beans and parsley leaves with vinaigrette. Arrange on plates, and top each with three roasted fig halves.

I have desperately wanted to incorporate cabochons into my stock of beads in my shop, but have been a little reluctant until now.

As I use more and more cabochons in my own jewelry designs, I am gaining a working knowledge of all of the different cuts and shapes these neat gemstones come in. So, of course the first round of cabochons I will be offering will be a selection of gemstones that I love, but I absolutely want your feedback on what kinds of cabochons you love to work with too.

These little beauties are everything that I love about gemstones! They are rich in color and sparkle for days like black diamonds. They are actually melanite garnets which are regular garnets that also contain titanium that cause their color to be black.

New Friends

The BF and I went on a mini hike Sunday morning and made some cute critter friends along the way.

This little bee also had a mystery insect friend hanging out with him, but we didn't notice him until we saw him in the picture after uploading it to the computer.

This crow was making all kinds of funny noises while he was chilling out on his tree branch. If the weather had been more gloomy out, this would have been a perfect Halloween picture.

These red ants have been busy working since we went on a hike last week. Unfortunately we forgot to bring the camera last Sunday and missed out on getting pictures of these guys trying to take a small stick down the hole. There was an entire team of ants bringing it down and back up again. I'm not sure if they ever got the stick all the way down, but it didn't look like they were going to give up. We will have to see if they are still at it next weekend.

Stone Brewery not only brews and serves tasty beers. They are also home to the fabulous Stone Bistro and Gardens.

The BF and I recently had a date night at the Bistro and had an awesome time. (We always have a great time at Stone). The brewery, bistro and gardens are beyond beautiful and we are lucky enough to live close by so we get to visit often. Not only do they have really yummy food and beer, Stone Brewery's philosophy on food and drink is incredibly progressive. They strive to use organic, healthful and local ingredients whenever possible.

New Favorite Wine

The BF brought home a new and really yummy bottle of wine. It is a 2006 syrah made by Shiloh Road. It is a very drinkable wine and a great value at $15.99.

The bottle is rated 91 points (out of 100) and I completely agree. It begins with a very dark berry jam and finishes with a silky, yet smoky note. (Do I sound like a foodie yet?)

We enjoyed a glass last night while I finished a pair of earring, which will be listed later this week and the BF watched football highlights. Does it get better than that?

Desert Island Movies

Last week I put together my Desert Island Disk list and promised that my list of movies would follow shortly. I'm here to make good on my word and have compiled my list of 5 movies that I would take with me to my desert island.

1. Rushmore - 1998

If you have never seen a Wes Anderson film, this would be my top pick. It's funny and sweet and I can watch it anytime. Plus, Bill Murray is a frigging genius.

2. Wizard of Oz - 1939

The Wizard of Oz is my favorite childhood movie. I was obsessed with the film and the story. I wished to be Dorothy, memorized all of the songs and sang them to death. The movie tells a beautiful story and of course introduced the world to Judy Garland.

3. The Big Lebowski - 1998

Oh, where do I begin with this movie? First, it is my most favorite Coen Brothers movie, although they have made many, many other fantastic films. There are so many one liners and off the wall characters. Jeff Bridges plays Jeffrey "the Dude" Lebowski and John Goodman plays Walter Sobchak. These two friends bowl together, lament about life and get in way over their heads in this must see dark comedy.

4. Pulp Fiction - 1994

Pulp Fiction is a crime drama directed by Quentin Tarantino. It single handedly revitalized John Travolta's career from the depths of uncool and is a true masterpiece, in my opinion.

5. Pride and Prejudice - 2005

I love, love, love period films and could never go to a desert island without one. It was really hard for me to choose, but Pride and Prejudice is my current favorite. The story is like a fairytale with a slightly feminist twist. If I am ever feeling down and out, this film picks me up and infuses me with feeling of sentiment and chivalry.

I just finished a new necklace that will be listed for sale in my jewelry shop later this week. I absolutely love this necklace and it was truly an undertaking to complete. I spent 40+ hours diligently wire wrapping over 300 teeny tiny black spinel gemstone beads onto sterling silver chain.

Don't even get me started about the huge teardrop shaped labradorite pendant - it is so flashy and colorful. This necklace deserves to be around some lucky lady's neck soon!

Desert Island Disks (and Movies)

If you were stranded on a Desert Island and could only bring 5 albums with you, and they are the only albums you will ever listen to again - what would they be? If that isn't the most impossible decision to make, now you have to decide the 5 movies you would bring with you.

Ugh, I know. Most. Difficult. Decision. Ever.

1. Dreams to Remember: The Otis Redding Anthology - Otis Redding

Otis Redding is probably my favorite soul singer. Of course I also love Wilson Picket and the Four Tops. Oh man, this is going to be difficult. I am also going to admit that I have already cheated, because this album is 2 disks. Anyway, Otis Redding has the most soulful, sultry voice and I can listen to him sing all day and all night. It is just a terrible shame that he left this world all too soon.

2. Return to Cookie Mountain - TV on the Radio

TV on the Radio is an indie rock band from New York City that formed in 2001. Return to Cookie Mountain was released in 2006 and was critically acclaimed by many music magazines. I love, love, love this album and would very happily be stranded on a desert island with it.

3. From the Choirgirl Hotel - Tori Amos

I love everything Tori Amos, but this album was a real departure from her previous albums. It isn't just her and a piano. She toured and recorded with a band and adopted a new, less minimal sound. I saw her when she toured for this album and the show was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G.

4. Repeater + 3 Songs - Fugazi

Fugazi is a post-hardcore punk bank from Washington DC. The lead singer, Ian MacKaye had previously been in Minor Threat, an amazing punk band, who I also love. Repeater is Fugazi's debut full length album that was released in 1990. The band supported many different causes and movements and was reflected in their music.

5. Blue Screen Life - Pinback

Pinback is an indie rock band from San Diego. They are super artsy-fartsy and make beautiful thought provoking music. Blue Screen Life is their second album that was released in 2001. My absolute favorite song from this album is "Boo", but the record is best know for the song "Penelope" which is about the band's pet goldfish who died.

These decisions were truly painful to make, as I had to leave off sooooo many musicians and bands that I love and respect. Maybe I will make a second list, just in case I might be rescued from my desert island, but then tragically deserted once again.

I can't bring myself to also do my desert island movies today - you will have to just wait and see.

If you are as equally insane as I am and want to do your own desert island disks and movies, I would love to see your choices. Then I will probably cry that I didn't include your disks and movies on my list.

Grapefruit and Orange Stars

I made a really yummy mixed greens salad with grapefruit and orange sections - and of course I didn't take a picture of the salad, but I did take a picture of the leftover grapefruit and orange after I cut out the sections because they were sooo pretty, like fruit stars.

I was sad to discard the fruit gems that I created, so after I took a picture I squeezed as much juice I could get out of them and made some grapefruit-orange spritzers with sparkling mineral water. They were super tasty too!

It's Almost Fall, Can you Feel It?

I have some new fall inspired gemstone beads in my shop that I just recently listed for purchase. I actually have some more gemstones perfect for the changing season, but I am going to hold onto them for a bit. I plan on using some of them for my own jewelry designs and am not sure yet of how much I am going to part with for Bacchus Beads.

Hessonite Garnet reminds me of leaves on a tree changing color, as they turn from yellow to orange, red and brown. These beads have a less gemmy quality and are much more organic in color and texture.

Green Amethyst, which is also called Prasiolite is perfect for fall jewelry pieces as well. It is a transparent gemstone that is a very unique shade of green, which I can best describe as a mint or moss green. It is one of my new very favorite gemstones, especially because it pairs so beautifully with Labradorite.

I am working on a new necklace that features both green amethyst and labradorite - so be sure to check back soon.

Tori's voice is as haunting as it is beautiful - much like Tori hereself, exceedingly complex and incredibly unique.

This is a vintage performance of Winter from 1991, right before her first album Little Earthquakes was released.

Her music has changed and evolved over the years, but Little Earthquakes is the album that made me a life long fan.

Vegetarian Chili, Zinc Cafe Inspired

I had a really tasty bowl of vegetarian chili at a cute little coffee shop/cafe called Zinc Cafe for lunch a few weeks ago. It was so good in fact, that I spent some time trying to perfect my own version and I am really happy with the results.

I'll do my best to write a proper recipe and if you cook it for yourself, let me know how you liked it.

- 1 onion chopped into small to medium pieces
- 3 cloves garlic minced
- 1/2 jalapeno pepper minced without seeds (you can include as much, or as little depending on the heat level you desire)
- 1 green bell pepper chopped into small to medium pieces
- 1 red bell pepper chopped into small to medium pieces (yellow or orange bell pepper would be great too)
- 1 15oz can red kidney beans
- 2 15oz can black beans (any variation of beans would work, depending on your preference. just make sure that you have around 45oz total)
- 1 28oz can diced tomatoes
- 1 15oz can tomato sauce
- 2tbsp chili powder

1. In a large dutch oven type pot, cook the onion, garlic, bell peppers and jalepeno pepper in 1tbsp olive oil. Cook over medium heat until onions are translucent, about 10 to 15 minutes. You don't want the vegetables to brown, so make sure heat is not too high.

2. Drain the water out of all 3 cans of beans and add to the dutch oven and allow to warm through, about 5 minutes. (I recommend using organic canned beans, which do not need to be rinsed. If you don't have organic, I would probably rinse the beans before adding them.)

3. Add 2tbsp chili powder along with salt and pepper to taste. (Go easy on the salt if the chili powder you have contains salt.) Stir the chili so everything is fully coated in the chili powder, salt and pepper.

4. Add the can of diced tomatoes and tomato sauce and allow the chili to heat through. Stir and taste, adjust seasoning if needed. You may find that 1 extra tbsp of chili powder is needed, depending on your taste. Lower heat to medium low and cover - allow chili to simmer for at least 30 minute up to 1 hour.

1. I love, love, love to cook. I am a very happy girl in the kitchen and even happier when I am feeding people I love. I inherited this from my grandmother, Pida who made magic in the kitchen everyday of her life.

2. My brother and I have the same birthday, but we're not twins. He was born on my 6th birthday and has been raining on my parade ever since. (Just kidding Jonathan - I love you!!!)

3. Nothing in this world scares me more that aliens. I saw Fire in the Sky when I was 13 and couldn't sleep without the door open and a night light on for weeks.

4. I love all arts and crafts. In addition to being a jewelry making crazed addict, I also love painting, drawing, ceramics, book making... (I could go on and on). I also inherited this from my other grandmother, Jean who was a talented painter and jewelry artist.

5. I can eat Spanish olives and dill pickles straight out of the jar until my lips pucker. Yum!

6. The Sure Thing is my all time favorite romantic comedy. John Cusack makes me swoon.

Kitties with Arthritis

Mia has been limping a lot more lately. First it was just in the morning, but now it seems that she is pretty much limping all the time. We have been giving her a homeopathic medicine, but it doesn't seem to be helping a whole lot.

Anyone have any suggestions or experience with this?

Trader Joe's, Pizza and other culinary tidbits

I consider myself to be extremely fortunate to have a Trader Joe's within a couple miles of my home. For those of you who already shop at TJ's, you know that it is so much more than a grocery store.

I do about 75% of my shopping at TJ's and they offer more and more organic fruits and vegetables as well as really interesting specialty and vegetarian foods. My only complaint is that occasionally, a product I love will just disappear off the shelf - never to be seen again.

My new favorite find at TJ's is their selection of fresh pizza doughs. They have a few different flavors (plain, whole wheat and herb whole wheat) and I went with the whole wheat with herbs and it was GREAT! My BF and I made a simple Margherita pizza and used tomatoes and basil from my dad's garden (sadly, you can't see the basil in the picture).

We had a tough time rolling and stretching out a perfect circle with the dough, but it was tasty all the same.

This isn't the exact recipe I used, (I didn't actually use a recipe at all) but it's pretty darn close.

Pizza Margherita
* 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
* 1/2 lb. plum Roma tomatoes, chopped
* 1 clove garlic, crushed and finely chopped
* 1/2 tsp. salt
* 1 12" uncooked dough crust
* 6 oz. mozzarella cheese, shredded
* 6 fresh basil leaves cut into julienne strips
* extra virgin olive oil
* 1/4 cup fresh shredded Parmesan cheese

1. Combine 2 Tbls. olive oil, tomatoes, garlic, and salt in bowl.
2. Allow to marinate while making dough.
3. Brush dough crust lightly with olive oil.
4. Top with cheese, then tomatoes.
5. Drizzle with olive oil.
6. Bake in preheated 500F oven on pizza stone for 8−10 minutes or until crust is golden brown and cheese is bubbly.
7. Remove from oven and top with parmesan cheese, then basil.
8. Cool on a wire rack for 2−3 minutes before cutting into wedges and serving.

Also, happy Friday everyone! I realize that I kind of psyched you out with the Holy Guacamole blog post title and admittedly feel a teensie bit guilty. So, to make amends I am including a great guacamole and margarita recipe to celebrate the weekend.

Guacamole Recipe

3 ripe avocados
3 tablespoons freshly squeezed lime juice (from 1 to 2 limes)
1/2 large tomato, stemmed
1/2 large onion, peeled and finely chopped
2 small cloves garlic, peeled and minced
1/2 jalapeno pepper, stemmed, seeded, and finely chopped
1/2 cup chopped cilantro leaves
1 teaspoon coarse salt, such as kosher salt
Freshly cracked pepper

Using a sharp knife, cut the avocados in half. Remove the pits. Scoop the flesh into a medium-sized bowl and roughly crush with a potato masher or fork. Stir in the lime juice.
Chop the tomato as finely as possible. Scrape the tomato flesh and juice into the bowl with the avocados.
Add the onion, garlic, jalapeno pepper, cilantro, salt and pepper and stir to mix.
Press a sheet of plastic wrap on the surface of the guacamole. Let sit for about 1/2 hour at room temperature and then adjust the seasonings; you may want to add more jalapeno pepper, lime juice, salt or pepper.
Serve at room temperature with tortilla chips for dipping.

Grapefruit Margarita Recipe

1 1/2oz of tequila of choice
3/4oz of triple sec
2oz of fresh grapefruit juice
splash of sweet and sour mix

Shake all ingredients together and strain into a sugar rimmed martini glass and garnish with a lime wedge.

There's no place like home

The Wizard of Oz is my favorite childhood film. I don't remember when I first watched the movie, but I do know that it was my first huge obsession. My parents video taped it for me and I watched that VHS out. I memorized every commercial played during the commercial breaks. I literally watched it so much and for so long that the tape finally went kaput and stopped working. (That was a rough day).

I loved Dorothy so much because of Judy Garland's heavenly voice and of course the ruby slippers. Even though the Wicked Witch was scary, I loved her too. Really, each of the characters in the film held a special meaning for me.

The movie tells a touching story that can be appreciated by children and adults alike. If you have never seen The Wizard of Oz, you should rent it today - you won't be disappointed.

New Bling In The Jewelry Shop

My jewelry shop has been sorely neglected and I am repenting.

I have some new designs to list in my shop and greatly improved photographs too. My newest necklace to be listed today is vintage/heirloom inspired and I must say that I love it!

I found a really interesting hexagon shaped locket made from super thick glass and sterling silver. I felt the locket would be perfect paired with a heavy gauged wire wrapped chain and the smokiness of the dark gray Swarovski pearls.

From Slab to Cab Part 2

In my earlier post, From Cab to Slab I wrote about cutting, grinding and polishing my very own cabochon. It was an extremely rewarding experience and I have made a few more since then.

I have been focusing most of my time recently learning how to fabricate sterling silver bezel settings for cabochons. So, here is my first handmade cabochon set in my first handmade bezel pendant. Hooray!!

Later this month I will be learning how to fabricate a sterling silver chain to accompany my new pendant.
